HONDURAS

One World Surgery funds and operates the Holy Family Surgery Center on the property of our partner, the children’s home Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH). The 2,000-acre NPH ranch is located approximately one hour northeast of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.

Holy Family Surgery Center

The Holy Family Surgery Center, opened in 2008, has three operating rooms, six clinic/overnight bays, a dental clinic, and an eye clinic. Dr. Merlin Antúnez, orthopedic surgeon, is the full-time, on-site Medical Director. Dr. Antúnez and a team of over 30 Honduran staff provide consults and surgeries year-round, as well as follow-up care for all medical mission patients. This model ensures that patients are offered the continuity of care that is essential for successful outcomes.

Medical missions serve as a catalyst to expand our impact and provide an extension into specialty services. Currently, the Holy Family Surgery Center offers surgeries and consults in the follow specialties: orthopedics; general surgery; ophthalmology; gynecology; urology; surgical oncology; and ear, nose, and throat. During week-long medical mission trips, volunteers work alongside our local team to perform life-changing surgeries. We host an average of two medical mission teams each month, with up to 60 volunteers per team.

The Moscati Center, One World Surgery’s visitor accommodations and conference center, is located about a 10-minute walk from the surgery center. In addition to housing volunteers and local staff, the Moscati Center hosts One World Surgery’s education and training program which aims to build capacity of Honduran medical professionals.
