Overcoming Hearing Loss with One World Surgery

My name is Debora, and my journey with hearing loss began while I was studying nursing in the Dominican Republic. I struggled to hear my teachers in the classroom, identify speech, and felt dizzy in the emergency room. It became particularly challenging when I took patients’ vital signs. Realizing I had a bigger problem, I visited a specialist who diagnosed me with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. I worried how this diagnosis would affect future employment, but I knew I could do my job well despite my hearing loss.

On my birthday last December, my doctor advised that I needed an auxiliary device to improve my hearing. But the cost of the device was unaffordable for me, especially since I was not employed, and government health insurance would not cover it.

Getting help seemed impossible until I found One World Surgery. I had been a beneficiary of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) during my childhood in the Dominican Republic, which is how we got connected. Dr. Frankeli Reinoso and Gregory Bigord from OWS reached out to learn more about my condition and see how they could help. Thanks to OWS, I received the headset I needed and an injection to ease the carpal tunnel syndrome in both of my hands. I now continue my nursing studies and hope to graduate this December, as well as work on my English and my courses in pharmacology.

The response from the OWS staff was incredible. I am deeply grateful for their unconditional support during this difficult time. It means the world to me to be able to hear clearly again and gives me hope for the future.
