Healing Hearts and Lives: Salustiano’s Journey with One World Surgery

Salustiano lives in the Dominican Republic with his wife, Haide, and their three children. He works on a chicken farm, which provides his family with an apartment and reduces their rent burden.

In 2016, Salustiano visited a clinic due to severe back pain that made his work on the farm challenging. Initially diagnosed with a kidney infection, his pain persisted despite treatment. Further tests, including an MRI, revealed a herniated disc. His demanding job involved caring for six sheds housing 35,000-40,000 chickens, feeding them 40-45 sacks daily, and ensuring proper ventilation.

Recognizing his physical limitations, Salustiano’s supervisor allowed him to work nights, reducing the physical strain. His wife often assisted him to prevent further injury while they worked to save for the necessary surgery.

The diagnosis marked the start of a difficult period for Salustiano’s family. One of their daughters, Veanny, was diagnosed with epilepsy from an early age. Already struggling financially due to Veanny’s medical needs, they were now burdened with the costs of Salustiano’s medical tests and surgery. They went into debt to afford their medical expenses, creating a cycle that was hard to break.

“My family depends on my income, and I can’t leave this job,” said Salustiano. “Physically, emotionally, and financially our family struggled every single day to survive. We often had to stop buying food to pay for more medical trips and tests. Despite my intense pain, I continued to work until I couldn’t anymore.”

A concerned friend, wanting to help, reached out to a One World Surgery social worker, named Gregory. Upon learning about Salustiano’s condition, he immediately contacted their family and visited with a doctor to learn more about their medical needs.

“Their concern for our family was impressive from the very beginning. On their first visit, they provided medicine for my daughter and me, and we were eternally grateful,” Salustiano shared.

One World Surgery then stepped in, covering the cost of Salustiano’s corrective surgery.

“My family and I thank the One World Surgery team who helped us. I am finally pain-free and can begin supporting my family again. May God continue to bless us always.”
