A Second Chance: Antonio’s Journey to Healing with One World Surgery

When Antonio left work on New Year’s Day, he had no idea his life was about to change. That evening, as he and his girlfriend headed home, their motorcycle was struck by a vehicle in a devastating accident.

“The moment of the crash, I could hear everything happening around me,” Antonio shared. “But I couldn’t react because of the pain. It was terrifying.”

Thanks to a nearby brigade and the quick actions of a witness who called 9-1-1, Antonio was transported to the regional hospital. He was later referred to a private clinic for specialized care. That’s when a new obstacle arose: the high cost of treatment.

A twin and the fourth of six siblings, Antonio works in a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) sewing and labeling T-shirts to support his family. “I couldn’t pay for the services I needed,” he said. “But a friend told me about One World Surgery. I made an appointment, and since that day I said to myself, my problem might be resolved here.

Antonio’s injury severely impacted his ability to work—he couldn’t fully close his left hand or grip objects. “When I close my hands, only three fingers close,” he explained. “I hope that after my therapy, I’ll be able to close my hand completely.”

One World Surgery’s team at the Dominican Republic site stepped in to help. They covered the costs of diagnostic testing and ultimately provided Antonio with life-changing surgery, free of charge. He lives just four kilometers from the ambulatory surgery center—an accessible distance that made consistent care possible.

“The day of my surgery, I was impressed by the dedication and devotion of the doctors. Everyone involved with OWS has been so kind, compassionate, and caring,” Antonio said. “Saying thank you is not enough.”

Antonio’s story is a powerful reminder of One World Surgery’s mission: to provide world-class surgical care to those who need it most. Every patient served, every surgery performed, and every life transformed strengthens our commitment to expanding access to healthcare across the Dominican Republic and beyond.
