From Pain to Possibility: Jessica’s Journey with OWS

When Jessica fell from a motorcycle in October 2024, her life was suddenly turned upside down. A painful knee injury made even the simplest movements—walking, bending, or working at her job in a nail salon—agonizing. For months, Jessica lived with constant pain. She tried to keep working, hoping her knee would heal, but each day the swelling and discomfort grew worse. Although she sought care at her local hospital, the treatment was limited, and her condition never improved.

Everything changed when a friend told her about One World Surgery’s new ambulatory surgery center in the Dominican Republic. Encouraged by the possibility of better care, Jessica made an appointment. That decision would transform her life.

At the center, Dr. Joice Morillo, OWS Medical Director, reviewed Jessica’s x-rays and ordered an MRI that revealed a complete ACL tear in her right knee. Surgery was necessary. The path ahead would include tests and evaluations to prepare her, but Jessica felt reassured knowing she was in the hands of a skilled and compassionate medical team.

“The courtesy and spirit of service of all the OWS members and the excellent physicians who treated me overflowed my heart with gratitude,” Jessica shared. “It was an unforgettable experience to witness people who provide such love and dedication to their patients.”

The surgery was a success. Today, Jessica is walking without pain, bending without difficulty, and returning to the life she thought she had lost. “I am forever grateful,” she said.

Jessica’s story is a powerful reminder of One World Surgery’s mission: delivering world-class surgical and primary care to vulnerable communities—at no cost to patients. For every patient like Jessica, there are thousands more waiting for compassionate care in the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

Together, with the support of donors, volunteers, and medical partners, OWS is building healthier tomorrows—one patient, one surgery, and one transformed life at a time.
