Triumphing Over Epilepsy and Rediscovering Hope

Meet Yaquelin, a young and resilient woman whose life has been marked by a courageous battle against epilepsy and memory loss. For five long years, she grappled with the fear of sudden seizures, causing her to make heartbreaking sacrifices, such as giving up her job, her freedom to drive, and her vibrant social life. The toll of her condition was not only physical but also emotional and caused her to fall into a depression.

Like clockwork, Yaquelin would experience seizures every month, leaving her no choice but to dial 911, triggering a desperate race to the emergency room. Following each episode, the prescribed medication would plunge her into unconsciousness, stealing away precious days of her life.

Yaquelin turned to the main public hospital in town, hoping to find answers. However, she received medication without the crucial input of a neurologist or any education on managing her condition. Sadly, the medication proved ineffective, leaving Yaquelin feeling hopeless and compelled to search for a lifeline elsewhere.

During a moment of sheer desperation, she arrived at the clinic during a One World Surgery primary care mission to find help. Within the embrace of the compassionate OWS local team, Yaquelin discovered a newfound sense of hope. She was not just another patient; she was an individual deserving of quality care, acceptance, and empowerment.

In the safe haven provided by the team, she received comprehensive education on seizure prevention and management. Most importantly, the OWS team’s commitment to continuity of care meant that they would be by Yaquelin’s side, constantly evaluating and adjusting her medications as needed, helping her regain control over her life.

Reflecting on her transformative experience, Yaquelin expressed, “The doctors treated me with so much love, respect, and acceptance. I will be forever grateful because they gave me hope again in such a dark moment of my life. This was exactly the help that I was looking for.”
